Albumen photograph, 4 x 6 in., mounted on cardstock to 4.5 x 7 in., featuring Ute Chief Ouray in Western dress with his hair styled in two braids. Titled in the negative, "'Ouray' The Great Ute Chief." Credited on verso to W.H. Jackson Photograph and Publishing Co., Denver, Co. Chief Ouray (ca 1833-1880) was a leader within the Ute tribe, specifically over the Uncompahgre band of Utes, then located in western Colorado. In his youth, Ouray worked for Mexican shepherds and went on to fight the Kiowa and the Sioux before taking over his father's position as chief in 1860. Ouray was recognized as a leader not only by his own people, but also by the United States government, as a result of several official meetings with Presidents Rutherford B. Hayes and Ulysses S. Grant. Provenance:American Indian Photography Collection of John W. Painter (1929-2008) Condition: Surface soil with general wear to edges and corners.
