W.C. FIELDS A collection of four letters from W.C. Fields, three to Carlotta Monti (Ms. C. Douglas , one to Lockwood Marshall; all dated between 1937 and 1940. In referring to Ms. Monti's audition for You Can't Cheat An Honest Man produced by Lester Cowan (on Lester Cowan's stationery), Mr. Fields advises " When you give your audition By all means-after your Spanish number give a quick imitation of Mae West" ; in 1940 he requests, " ...please go to Brentano's Book Store on Fifth Avenue in the Forties I think and get me a copy of "The Lord Of San Simeon" , and " I have cut down considerably on John Barleycorn and it is playing havoc with my nerves. "; all letters include original envelopes and signed with various names, "Bill", "Fieldsie Old Boy", "Nosey Parker Fields" and "The Great Man." (4)
