The opera achieved great popularity, and three leading Viennese publishers scrambled to bring out the most popular numbers, Artaria leading the way. He advertised two items (publisher's numbers 94 & 95) on 23 November 1791 and had brought out a substantial proportion of the opera by the end of the year. He published 24 numbers in all, but not the complete opera, omitting parts of both finales. He also brought out many reissues, attempting to undercut his rivals, and the chronology of the competing publications among the Viennese publishers is notoriously complex. Artaria's publications include the first editions of many individual numbers, although some were issued contemporaneously with Kozeluch's (see Hoboken and Haberkamp p.360). This volume contains the following 23 numbers; the earliest is probably no.15, Sarastro's 'In diesen heil’gen Hallen' (Artaria's "No 95"), published in Mozart's lifetime, which bears the owner's inscription. 1) Overtura [no.] 377, priced at 24Xr, Haberkamp's 1st issue, [Hoboken 510], 1792 2) Aria Der Vogelfänger bin ich ja, Samlung von Arien Nro 97, captioned ‘Aria’ above music, priced at 6xr, 1st issue, [Hoboken 511], 1791 3) Das Bildnis ist bezabernd schön…Nro 109…Cum Prov.S.C.M. 15xr, captioned ‘Aria’ above the music, 1st issue, [Hoboken 513], 1792, with, loosely inserted, an early Viennese manuscript of the aria signed by the scribe, 4 pages, 10-stave paper watermarked "G A" and 3 crescent moons . 4) Arie mit Recitativ Zum Leiden bin ich auserkoren…Nro 110...Cum Priv.
