Rogers set sail from Bristol with William Dampier as his pilot and travelled along the coasts of Chile and Peru seeking out Spanish prizes. He landed on the Juan Fernandez Islands in order to shelter from a severe storm and there rescued the marooned Alexander Selkirk, the inspiration for Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe.
