Back, Sir George. NARRATIVE OF THE ARCTIC LAND EXPEDITION TO THE MOUTH OF THE GREAT FISH RIVER, AND ALONG THE SHORES OF THE ARCTIC OCEAN, IN THE YEARS 1833, 1834 AND 1835. London: John Murray 1836. First Edition. 8 1/2 by 5 1/2 inches in an early 1/2 black leather and marbled boards with the binder's ticket, "G. Armstrong." Complete in 663 pages plus 16 plates and folding map. "As a literary composition this work may rank higher than any former volume produced by the Northern expeditions." (Hill, p. 12) "Back's narrative is full of details about the Cree, Chippewa, Coppermine Indians, and other tribes upon whom the members of the expedition were obliged to depend during a terrible winter." (Ricks, p. 30) Condition: An attractive example of an important account. Modest handling wear and rubbing to the covers with professional restoration to the joints and inner hinges. The folding map with several tape repairs and a 2 inch "closed tear" near the connection at the inner hinge. Most of the engraved plates are based upon drawings by Back and were engraved by Finden.
