VOGT, Johann (1695-1764). Catalogus historico-criticus librorum rariorum. Hamburg: Christian Herold, 1753. 8 o (177 x 102 mm). Engraved head-piece. (Some occasional spotting.) Contemporary red morocco, triple gilt-fillet on sides, smooth spine gilt with floral tools, green morocco lettering piece, edges gilt (spine slightly darkened, few small repairs). Provenance : de Verdon (bookplate). An early edition in a fine binding of "the best known and most successful compilation of this kind" (Taylor). In the eighteenth century a variety of bibliographical compilation based largely on catalogues of private libraries was developed to serve both scholars and dealers. There were five editions of Vogt's work published between 1732 and 1793. "These sixty years represent roughly the period in which such compilations were most popular in Germany" (Taylor pp. 42-43).
