In the eighteenth century a variety of bibliographical compilation based largely on catalogues of private libraries was developed to serve both scholars and dealers. There were five editions of Vogt's work published between 1732 and 1793. "These sixty years represent roughly the period in which such compilations were most popular in Germany" (Taylor pp. 42-43).
