Title within woodcut historiated architectural border, 132 woodcut illustrations and diagrams (8 double-page, many full-page, 6 illustrations with woodcut overslips or extentions, the two plates on theaters at end have duplicate revolving plates, Q2 with the volvelle, pasted canceled illustrations on E8v and F7r, B3 a cancel), 11-line woodcut initials, numerous 6-line initials (title-page lightly soiled and with V 2-V 4 with marginal repairs). (Some occasionally browning.) Later parchment over contemporary vellum (lightly soiled rubbing to extremities). Provenance : Contemporary marginal annotation R2; Peter Delmé Esq. (18th-century bookplate); W. Gedney Beatty (1869-1941), American architect (gifted to): The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Department of Prints (inkstamp). FIRST EDITION of Daniele Barbaro's translation and commentary WITH ILLUSTRATIONS BY ANDREA PALLADIO (1508-1580) and possibly Giuseppe Porta Salviati (1520-1575) and Giovanni Antonio Rusconi (1520-1579). Barbaro's edition "is widely considered to be the most significant Italian edition of the treatise. the illustrations provided by Andrea Palladio among others, are the most persuasive architectural illustrations associated with the Vitruvian text" (Millard).
