Provenance : Petrus de Toullideus(?), prof. of law at Lingen, Germany (inscription on flyleaf). This edition is a reprint of the Strassburg edition of 1543, but with the addition of the notes by Guillaume Philander "Vitruvius's De architectura , the only surviving classical treatise on architecture...comprises ten books on the theory and practice of architecture, which in ancient times encompassed not only building construction but also many aspects of mechanical engineering including hydraulics, ballistics and the construction of timepieces. The work contains much useful information on ancient materials and techniques, but it is the theoretical aspects... that have had the most historical significance" (Norman, p.791).
