VITRUVIUS POLLIO, Marcus. De Architectura libri X - Nicolas de CUSA. De Statisticis experimentis - FRONTINUS. De Aquaeductibus . Strassburg: Georg Messerschmidt for Knobloch, August 1550. 4° (185 x 135mm). Title printed in red and black, numerous woodcuts, some full-page. (Some minor marginal worming at upper hinge, small wormhole in final quires affecting a few letters, light dampstain at upper hinge in first quires.) 18th-century vellum, title lettered on spine, sprinkled edges (slight staining to covers). Provenance : Petrus de Toullideus(?), prof. of law at Lingen, Germany (inscription on flyleaf). This edition is a reprint of the Strassburg edition of 1543, but with the addition of the notes by Guillaume Philander "Vitruvius's De architectura , the only surviving classical treatise on architecture...comprises ten books on the theory and practice of architecture, which in ancient times encompassed not only building construction but also many aspects of mechanical engineering including hydraulics, ballistics and the construction of timepieces. The work contains much useful information on ancient materials and techniques, but it is the theoretical aspects... that have had the most historical significance" (Norman, p.791). Adams V-907; Cicognara 711.
