Vittorio Amedeo, duke of Savoy, became king of Sicily in 1713 when the island was given to Savoy under the Treaty of Utrecht. This richly illustrated volume recounts the festivities occasioned by Vittorio Amedeo and his wife Anne's first visit to their new principality and their coronation at Palermo. The plates depict the royal cavalcade arriving in Palermo, four of the six triumphal arches erected around the city, the adornment of public and private buildings and palazzi, the celebratory fireworks, and commemorative medals, a plaque, and a marble sculpture erected on the Duomo. The author describes the extensive preparation and decoration of the city, as well as the procession and coronation itself; numerous laudatory poems and tributes close the volume. RARE.
