VITAL, Hayyim (Safed; 1542-1620). [ Likkutim ] (abridgements and extracts from his and other writings). MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER Copied by Jehiel Michel ben Samson Eisenstadt and his brother Mordecai, Hamburg, 1721-1724 2 o (325 x 205 mm). 199 leaves, with various Hebrew foliations. Brown ink. Two Ashkenazic semi-cursive scripts. (Slightly browned and stained, otherwise good condition.) Later diced russia over bevelled wooden boards, covers with blind-stamped arabesque centerpiece, two chased brass clasps and catches preserved, two paper flyleaves at back and front, sprinkled edges. CONTENTS: I. Fols. 2r-89v: Abridgements and extracts from the writings of Hayyim Vital, probably edited by the scribe himself. Fols. 90r-94v: blank. II. Fol. 1r: Title Nof Ets Chayyim . Fol. 1v: blank. Fols. 2r-82r: text Nof Ets Chayyim , branch 2, on Biblical passages, by Hayyim Vital (redaction by Meir Poppers). Published with the title Likkutei Torah (Zolkiew 1775; Vinograd, Thesaurus , p. 314, no. 364). Fols. 82v-83v: blank. III. Fol. 1r: title Meshivat Nefesh . Fol. 1v: introduction Meshivat Nefesh . Fols. 2r-20v; 178r-199v: Meshivat Nefesh by Jacob Zemah. Treatise on transmigration of souls edited by Zemah from the teachings of Hayyim Vital as transmitted by Samuel Vital. Not published, but several other manuscripts of this treatise exist. Fols. 95-142 were copied by Jehiel Michel ben Samson Eisenstadt in 1721 and the rest (fols. 1-94, 146-end) was copied by his brother Mordecai in 1724. Jehiel Michel copied three other manuscripts now in Oxford, MSS. Mich. 28 and 443-4. PROVENANCE: Daniel Itzig (stamped).
