VIRGINIA THEATRE, ARMY OF THE POTOMAC]. WILLIAMS, Alpheus S. (1810-1878), General, U. S. Army . Autograph letter signed LS ("A. Williams") to Gen. Hamilton, Head Qrs. 3d Brigade, Bunker Hill, 6 March 1862. 2 pp., 8vo . GETTING READY TO FIGHT JACKSON IN THE VALLEY: "MY IMPRESSION IS...THAT JACKSON INTENDS TO MAKE A STAND AT WINCHESTER": "I have no especial news-except that the route to W. [Winchester] is strongly fortified. The slopes of the mountains which run parallel to the W. pike are dug with rifle pits, & there is a battery or earth works which commands the road. They can be turned I think four miles from this, so that we can reach the mountain side & turn the pits & fortifications....My impression is, from information here, that Jackson intends to make a stand at W. If the thing is properly managed we can make a great point." -- HUNT, Henry Jackson (1819-1899), General, U. S. Army . ALS ("H. J. Hunt") to Gen. Sprague, 2 February 1863. 2 pp., 8vo, on stationery of Office of Chief of Artillery, Army of the Potomac, clip burn, two punch holes at top, discreet mends at fold . "McMahon's battery is going to the dogs for want of a man , and I hear nothing of the absent Captain, who some say was no better than those officers now with it." -- MILROY, Robert H. (1816-1890), General, U. S. Army . Autograph letter signed ("R. H. Milroy") to Abraham Lincoln, Head Quarters, Milroy's Indpt. Va. Regt., Near Ft. De Calb, Alxr. Co. Va., 27 September 1862. 1 page, 4to . Recommending Donn Piatt for a Brigadier Generalship: "Plenty of brains, highly intellectual & cultivated, brave, cool & energetic with heart & soul in the cause." -- STURGIS, Samuel D. (1822-1889), General, U. S. Army . Autograph document signed ("S. D. Sturgis"), General Order No. 1, Headquarters Reserve Army Corps, Washington, D. C. 18 June 1862. 1 p., 4to, evidence of mounting on verso . "Pursuant to instructions from the war Department, the undersigned hereby assumes command of all the forces in and about the city of Washington, except such as may be required by Brig. Genl. Wadsworth....Such of these troops as are north of the Potomac will hold themselves in readiness to move at a moment's warning. Until further orders, general Head Quarters will be as at present, Cor. 19 & I Streets." -- WHEATON, Frank (1833-1903), General, U. S. Army . Autograph letter signed ("Frank Wheaton") to Senator H.
