Virginia Bodman Postcard from Cannaregio, 2021 Acrylic on Paper Signed on verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) Virginia Bodman (b. 1954) grew up on a small farm in Wiltshire, after attending the Foundation course in Art and Design at The College, Swindon, Wilts, 1973-74, she attended Birmingham Polytechnic, 1974-77, graduating with a First Class BA (Hons) in Fine Art (Painting). This was followed by a Fellowship in Painting at Exeter College of Art,1977-78. She then attended the Painting School, Royal College of Art, 1978-198, (MA RCA) She was then awarded an Abbey Major Scholarshipat the British School at Rome,1981-83 and was then the first artist in residence post at Durham Cathedral, 1983-4. Other awards include: 2006; ACE (NE) award (for Home Ground cat.), 2007; Invited Artist, 32nd Artists Symposium, Lazar Castle, Lazarea, Transylvania, Romania, 2006; AHRB Small Grant,2002-03; Rootstein Hopkins Sabbatical Award, 2000-01; Artists Residency, Wysing Arts, Bourn, Cambridge, 2000; Berwick Gymnasium Fellowship,1999-2000; Leverhulme Fellowship, 1996-97; Major Artists Bursary, Northern Arts, 1994. She moved to Sunderland in 1990 where she has a studio. She was Senior Lecturer in Fine Art at the University of Sunderland from 1990-2018, (Head of Painting, 1990-2003, MA Fine Art programme leader, 1999-2013, part-time SL from 2015-2018). Prior to that she lived in London and taught in various art schools in England and Wales.
