VIRGIN AND CHILD, illuminated micrographic miniature on paper
VIRGIN AND CHILD, illuminated micrographic miniature on paper [Iran, 16th century, ?Germany 16th 17th century, ?New Julfa, Isfahan 1700] 364 x 245mm. The Virgin and Child, lily and vase delineated in micrographic German script, bordered above and below with inscription in Armenian Erkat'gir majuscule in white on a blue ground, the miniature laid down between gold speckled cream margins, within wide 16th-century Safavid blue border from an album (faint stain to Virgin's robe affecting text, eyes strengthened, a few small areas of rubbing or loss at edges of miniature, some slight flaking to Safavid borders). Cream silk mount. Provenance : the infamous Georges Demotte (1877-1923) (green mount on back with circular label '4652') of Paris and New York who principally traded in medieval French art, but the best known action in a colourful life was his splitting and dispersal of the pages from the Persian manuscript known as the Great Mongol Shahnameh (Book of Kings). This leaf is another reflection of his involvement with Islamic art and the inventive enterprise that he brought to his trade. It is a fabulous confection, bringing together three cultures. The central devotional image of the Virgin and Child, its design possibly based on a print, is delineated in minute words of German displaying the same taste for and skill in micrography seen in lot 18. The image was ornamented with colour and gold when the inscriptions were added in Armenian in 1700, asking the viewer to remember the owner and his sons. The exquisite, elegant Safavid borders are particularly fine examples of their type, exquisitely illuminated with naturalistic and mythical beasts shown fighting amidst trees, flowers, foliage and birds.
