Libro ... appartenente a l'archittetura nel qual si figurano alcune notabili antiquita di Roma . [Rome: in Casa Nostra, 1557]. Engraved title, 3 preliminary letterpress leaves (ff. 2-4) and one letterpress leaf of text (ff.'31'), 26 (of 27) engraved plates only numbered in ms. 5-30, 32-35. (Lacking final plate, some waterstaining and soiling, pl. 12 with marginal tear, pl. 34 stained.) Together 2 works in one volume, 2° (395 x 265mm). 18th-century panelled calf (joints cracked, old repair at head of spine). Provenance : S. Vittaud? (ownership inscription on both titles, the first dated 1656) -- £2-12-6 (purchase price recorded on front blank) -- Francis Ferrand Foljambe (stamp on title). FIRST EDITION, 'Series A' of Vignola's work, which was 'immediately accepted as the most reliable short guide to the proportion and formal vocabulary of the Orders' (R.J. Turtle, Paper Palaces , p. 200). The first edition was probably 'reprinted as demand dictated between 1562 and at least 1572' (RIBA p. 2217). The earliest date established for publication is 12 June 1562, the presentation copy at the Biblioteca Nazionale in Florence being the only one known in the earliest state, with both plates I-II unnumbered. In the Foljambe copy, plate IIII has the names of the parts of the column ('Base', 'Colonna' etc.) added, and the ensuing plates also have the additions listed in RIBA (p. 2216) which indicate second rather than first state. It excludes the plate showing a comparison of the five orders, not found in either state of the first edition (but afterwards introduced as plate III). Copies in the second state may contain an additional five unnumbered plates; in this copy the 32 plates, including title, reflect the original number published. Third edition of Labacco's Libro , a work often bound with Vignola's, and with notable similarities in the scale and presentation of some of the plates. 1st work: Fowler 351 (copy with 5 additional plates); cf. BAL/RIBA 3447. 2nd work: cf. RIBA 1703.
