(Astronomie, Dessin) - - " View of the Observatory erected above the Cross of St. Pauls' from which a panoramic view of London and its Environs was executed by Mr Tho[ma]s Hornor". [ 1821]. ORIGINAL PENCIL DRAWING with black ink, 20 x 15 cm, on wove paper (margins slightly browned). Upper corners pasted on paper board and under passepartout.
Contemporary drawing of the temporary observatory constructed above St Paul's Cathedral in 1821. During repairs on the Cathedral's Dome the land surveyor Thomas Hornor (1785-1844) used the scaffolding around the top of the church to install a small shelter that he called his "observatory". There he produced a panorama of the city in 2000 sketches that were initially intended to be reproduced as a series of prints. Instead they were reproduced on canvas and became an attraction as the "Grand Panorama of London" in Regent's Park Colosseum. With 2 newspaper articles (20th century) and photocopy from "The Mirror". # Elmes, Inventing the modern city, 2008, pp. 108-109. Top J'enchéris
