Contemporary drawing of the temporary observatory constructed above St Paul's Cathedral in 1821. During repairs on the Cathedral's Dome the land surveyor Thomas Hornor (1785-1844) used the scaffolding around the top of the church to install a small shelter that he called his "observatory". There he produced a panorama of the city in 2000 sketches that were initially intended to be reproduced as a series of prints. Instead they were reproduced on canvas and became an attraction as the "Grand Panorama of London" in Regent's Park Colosseum.
