Vicksburg Parole Issued to Captain John B. Rowan, 3rd Maryland Light Artillery, 1863

Partially printed parole pass issued to Captain John B. Rowan, 3rd Maryland Light Artillery, 1p, 7.5 x 5 in., Vicksburg, MS. July 10, 1863. Rowan swears that he will "not take up arms again against the United States, nor serve in any military, police, or constabulary force in any Fort, Garrison or field work, held by the Confederate States of America, against the United States." Verso with notations granting Rowan permission to travel. James Brown Rowan joined the Confederate Army on September 1, 1861 as a captain. He was commissioned into the 3rd Maryland Light Artillery and ordered to Knoxville, TN. After service in both Tennessee and Kentucky, the 3rd Maryland Artillery was assigned to the brigade of General A.W. Reynolds, Department of East Mississippi and Louisiana. Rowan, like the majority of his unit, participated in the the Siege of Vicksburg and was captured by Union forces. After their exchange, the officers and men were consolidated with an artillery unit from Georgia. Rowan was killed in battle at Franklin, TN on November 30, 1864. Condition: Creasing, with some small tears and areas of staining/discoloration.
