Contemp. full blind-tooled vellum (minor imperfections, good condition) with manuscript title on spine. Ex libris and short inscription on front pastedown, with added engraved portrait of the author by his son Jacob Houbraken and engraved title, regular title page in red and black with engraved vignette, profusely illustrated with 57 engraved emblems in the text. Occasional light marginal stains, else internally exceptionally clean, fine copy. Pagination error as usual. (26), 1-240, 245-251, (9) pp. Notes: Very nice emblem book with poems by Gesine Brit (1669 (?) - 1747), partly based on the work of Jacob Zeeus who died before publication. Manuscript title with married name 'Gezine van Gavere'. Although she was married in 1711 (according to the Digitaal Vrouwenlexicon van Nederland, see http://resources.huygens.knaw.nl/bwn1780-1830/DVN/lemmata/data/brit ), the title page explicitly mentions here maiden name: "Juffr.
