VERDI, Giuseppe (1813-1901). Autograph letter signed to Giovanni Barezzi, n.p. [Venice?], n.d.[late February or early March 1851?], asking Barezzi to settle some accounts which are listed and requesting him to keep the money until Verdi's arrival from Venice, black ink, 1 page, 4 o , 209 x 134mm., integral address leaf, (some creasing and minor repaired tear). Verdi writes to Giovanni Barezzi at Busseto. Giovanni was the son of Verdi's patron, Antonio Barezzi, and the brother of Verdi's first wife, Margherita, whom Verdi married in 1836 but who died four years later. For the next ten or twelve years, Verdi, who was constantly travelling, often used his brother-in-law for business affairs in Busseto, mostly, as in this letter, paying bills. After Verdi began to live with Giuseppina Strepponi (whom he finally married in 1859) in the summer of 1851, a matter of a few months after the probable date of this letter, relations with Giovanni cooled. This letter is typical of those Verdi wrote to Barezzi, Lacking the time to come to Busseto, I write asking you to settle... and giving a brief account of some debits and credits. The letter lacks a date, but Verdi's words until my arrival from Venice, which will be between 10th or 12th March , suggest that he may have been writing from Venice during rehearsals for Rigoletto , which was first performed, after a delay of at least a day, on 11 March 1851. Verdi returned to Busseto after the third performance. Apparently unpublished.
