Beschreibung:

Venner (Tobias). Via Recta ad Vitam Longam. Or, A Treatise wherein the right way and best manner of living for attaining to a long and healthfull life, is clearly demonstrated and punctually applyed to every age and constitution of body. The fourth impression, amplified with many profitable additions. By Tob. Venner Doctor of Physick in Bathe. Whereunto is annexed a very necessary and compendious treatise of the famous baths of Bathe; with a censure of the medicinal faculties of the water of St. Vincent’s Rocks near the city of Bristol. As also an accurate treatise concerning tobacco by the same author, London: printed [by T.R.] for Abel Roper, 1660, without portrait frontispiece, general title with closed tear, cropped to upper ruled border and lined to verso, dedication leaf A2 mis-signed A3 with shorter all round margins (probably supplied from another copy), A3 slightly shorter at fore-edge and restored to upper inner corner affecting last couple of letters to four lines on verso, quire C trimmed shorter at foot, occasional early marginalia, light dust-soiling, toning and few minor marks, ownership signature of bookseller W.M. Fletcher to verso of front free endpaper, late 19th century green half morocco, slightly rubbed, 4to (Qty: 1) ESTC R203873; Wing V196; Thomason, E.1036[1]. The fourth edition of the work, published in the year of the author's death at the age of 83. "A briefe and accurate treatise concerning the taking of the fume tobacco", originally published in 1621, and "The baths of Bathe" (1628) each have a separate title page dated 1660. Venner was a Somerset physician and his treatise on tobacco deplores its recreational use, but recommends it as a means of improving digestion and countering the malign effects of cold, misty weather and contagious air. Venner had a seasonal practice in Bath from as early as 1613; he was the first to write exclusively about the city's spa. His medical advice is generally traditional, discussing how the six "non-naturals" (environment, diet, sleep, exercise, excretion and the passions of the mind) affect the balance of the four humours, though he advocates bran to prevent constipation, and regular cleaning of the teeth to prevent tooth decay and bad breath. He also cautions against using lead pipes for drinking water.
