Verses in Latin, English and Italian. Woodcut device on title, Herbert arms on verso. One full-page engraved emblematic illustration, 124 engraved emblems each within an oval woodcut frame, all by C. Boel. (A few leaves with repairs, A1/4 possibly supplied, some light browning and staining.) 19th-century red morocco gilt, edges gilt. Provenance : Henry Huth (bookplate); acquired from Chiswick Book Shop, 1968. FIRST EDITION of the English version. Van Veen published four polyglot versions simultaneously, of which the present version is the rarest. It is dedicated to Shakespeare's patrons, William Herbert, Earl of Pembroke and his brother Philip Herbert, Earl of Montgomery, and has English verses by Richard Verstegan (née Rowlands) an Englishman of Dutch grandparents living in Antwerp.
