VARIOUS ARTISTS THIS IS SUBWAY ADVERTISING. 1948. Group of 9 miniature posters. 5 1/2x10 1/2 inches. New York Subways Advertising Co. Condition varies, generally A-. Printed on heavy stock. A nice group of mid-century American graphic designs, promoting advertising in the New York City subway system. The artists include E. McKnight Kauffer Paul Rand Lester Beall, Herbert Bayer Erik Nitsche and Otis Shepard. These miniature car-cards were used as part of a campaign to boost advertising on the New York subway system. They were sent to prospective advertisers on a weekly a basis, along with miniature reproductions of the posters used in the subway advertising series themselves (not included here). Their goal was to "reveal in a new light the almost unlimited possibilities of this medium." Each card has the artist's bio on the back and a factoid about advertising on the subway.
