Vanessa Gardiner Sea Wall (Trevalga), 2020 Acrylic on Paper Signed verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.)I have always been drawn to the natural geometry of coastal regions and the dramatically beautiful landscape of north Cornwall has long been a recurrent source for my paintings. The geometric angles, lines and shapes formed where land meets sea has an ever absorbing fascination for me. I start by using a small sketchbook and drawing directly from the subject. Some of these may be close, observational drawings made over a period of time or quicker notes purely to glean some specific information which I will use back in the studio. It is only then that I can in some sense feel justified in abstracting and reordering the landscapes into the carefully selected compositions I use later in my paintings, knowing they will be true to the place. During the painting process, I often redraw the image, scouring and sanding back the paint until the surface becomes significantly changed and enlivened, taking on a beautiful patina and leaving traces and histories of paint, which in turn reveal qualities of their own.' Vanessa Gardiner is a well-established painter who has been working as a professional artist for many years. She was born in 1960 in Oxford where her father was a tutor of philosophy at Magdalen College. She did her Foundation year at Oxford Polytechnic going on to study Fine Art at the Central School of Art and Design in London. After six major solo shows at the Hart Gallery in London, she had her first solo show at the Thackeray Gallery in 2015. At Sladers Yard, she had solo shows 2008, 2012 and 2016 and two two-man shows in 2019. Her work is in private collections around the world and in public collections including Exeter Hospital, Bournemouth University Collection, Carlow Collection Ireland, the Archive of the Ballinglen Arts Foundation Co. Mayo, Cowley Manor, Huddersfield Art Gallery, Fidelity International, New Hall Cambridge, Magdalen College Oxford, the British Academy London and the British School in Athens.
