VALÉRY, Paul, Paul ELUARD Renée MOUTARD-ULDRY, Georges BLAIZOT and Louis-Marie MICHON. Paul Bonet... avec cent cinquante sept réproductions de reliures en couleurs et en noir (1927-1944). Paris: Auguste Blaizot, 1945. 4° (328 x 250mm). 3 full-page and 3 double-page colour plates, 157 black-and-white illustrations on 156pp. EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED WITH FIVE ORIGINAL DESIGNS BY BONET. BINDING DESIGNED BY PAUL BONET, for Jacques Millot, executed between July 1945 and May 1946 by René Desmules ( relieur ) and Collet ( doreur ), dated 1946: dark purple crushed levant morocco, covers gilt with a baroque décor irradiant (concentric irregularly-shaped waves of rays, forming identical patterns on both covers, around a central area which, on the front cover, has the name Paul Bonet lettered in blind; the design carried across the flat spine), bright-purple suede doublures and endleaves bordered in blue calf, original wrappers bound in, edges gilt, original morocco-backed and edged chemise and slipcase, signed: Paul Bonet, and dated 1946. Provenance : Jacques Millot (presentation inscription from Bonet). ONE OF BONET'S EARLIEST BINDINGS ON THE PUBLICATION THAT CELEBRATES HIS OWN ACHIEVEMENTS, and a very fine example of one of his Irradiant bindings. Edition limited to 300 copies, this number 31 of 50 special copies. This copy with six additional reproductions, several in colour, of maquettes. The extra-illustrations are of designs and maquettes showing the progress from Bonet's first idea to the final calque or tracing for the finisher. The half-title is inscribed "Pour Monsieur le Professeur Millot qui en me confiant la relieure de cet ouvrage me contraignit à renoncer à toute modestie. Avec mes sentiments reconnaissants et en toute sympathie pour nos amis les livres. Paul Bonet." Millot became one of Bonet's most active supporters and friends. In his Carnets Bonet gives a detailed description of the binding, calling the colour of the doublures opéra . He later added a note to his original description "La plus contestable des quatre relieures de ce livre et de cette composition - le baroque sans nécessité dépasse sa raison d'être." Bonet. Carnets 750.
