Valentin Canalizo, General de Division, Governador y Comandante General del Departamento de Mexico... Que Considerando que los Medios de Fuerza y de Conquista no han sido Suficientes en mas de trescientos Anos... Author: Canalizo, Valentin Place: México Publisher: Date: June 22, 1843 Description: Broadside, single sheet printed on one side only. Signed in type by Valentin Canalizo and by Luis G. de Chávarri, Secretario. 32.5x21.5 cm (11¾x8½"). Rare broadside communicating Santa-Anna's decree allowing the Jesuits to once again establish missions into northern Mexico, including California, New Mexico and Texas, with the main goal being to quell ongoing unrest among the native populations. The only listing we could find, either in OCLC or sale records at auction or retail, was in John Howell-Books Catalogue 50, 1979, with their rather succinct summary of the text: "Since three hundred years of force and conquest had not been sufficient to introduce civilization to the wild Indians of the Mexican frontier areas, Santa Anna authorized the readmittance of the Jesuits to establish missions in the Californias, New Mexico, Sonora, Sinaloa, Durango, Chihuahua, Coahuila, and Texas to Christianize and subdue them. Issued at Tacubaya." A translation of the main body of the document: Antonio López de Santa Anna, benemérito de la patria, general de division and provisional President of the Mexican Republic, to all its inhabitants, know that considering that the means of force and conquest have not been sufficient in more than three hundred years to introduce the uses of the civilization in the barbarian tribes that still inhabit some of our border departments, and that they cut them down and destroy them in a savage and uncompromising war: that the religion of the Society of Jesus has always devoted itself with praiseworthy zeal to the reduction of barbarian Indians by preaching to them a sweet, humane and eminently civilizing religion: that several authorities in those departments, and many citizens most distinguished by their adherence to well-understood liberal principles, have recommended this measure as very capable of contributing to the the security of the territory where the wandering tribes reside, and that this institution is admitted to the United States and other republics of America without diminishing or prejudicing the form of republican government and the freedoms that so much blood has cost it to establish in America, in the use of powers granted to me by the seventh of the bases agreed upon in Tacubaya and sanctioned by the will of the nation, I have been kind enough to decree what is contained in the following article. Missions of the Society of Jesus may be established in the departments of California, New Mexico, Sonora, Sinaloa, Durango, Chihuahua, Coahuila and Tejas for the sole purpose of devoting themselves to the civilization of the barbarian tribes through the preaching of the Gospel, so that in this way the integrity of our territory is more assured. Lot Amendments Condition: Some toning to the paper, a little edge wear, small burn hole in upper left margin well away from text; horizontal fold, a few additional ill creases; very good. Item number: 334742
