VALE PRESS] CELLINI, BENVENUTO [SYMONDS, ARTHUR-trans]. The Life of ... London and New York: Hacon & Ricketts, John Lane, 1900. From an edition of 310, this is one of ten copies printed on animal vellum. Two volumes, russet brown morocco by Zaehnsdorf, with intricately decorated, inlaid borders on each cover in navy blue, with tooled, inlaid panels on four of six compartments on spines gilt-ruled and tooled dentelles, with watered cream silk endpapers, top edges gilt. The Zaehnsdorf exhibition stamp is on back inner board of each volume. 7 1/2 x 11 1/4 inches (28 x 19 cm); clxxxvi; clxxxviii, [2] pp. Light wear to binding, the front joint of the first volume showing slight wear, occasional minor toning to the vellum as usual, a very attractive set. The lawyer and poet Charles Erskine Scott Wood's copy, with an ink inscription from him to Helen L[add]. Corbett (likely from 1900-1914, the years in which Wood and Corbett were associated). A magnificent copy of the most substantial work to come from Hacon and Ricketts' Vale Press, exceptionally uncommon printed on vellum. C
