.58 caliber. 40" barrel secured by three flat spring retained barrel bands. SN: NSN. Bright finish, iron furniture, including patchbox and nose cap, walnut stock. Standard two-line U.S. / SPRINGFIELD lock marking with {Spread-Winged Eagle} on tape primer door, dated 1860 at rear of lock. Barrel with matching 1860 date and standard V / P / {Eagle Head} proof marks. Two clear script cartouches on counterpane, the JS of arsenal inspector John Stillmann and the ESA of Springfield's master armorer Erskine S Allin. Correct 1858 pattern rear sight with curved top sight blades, correct musket style combination front sight and socket bayonet lug. Maynard tape primer mechanism remains complete. Retains both sling swivels and an original swelled-shank, tulip-head ramrod. The iron patchbox variant of the Type II 1855 Rifle Musket is one of the most sought after of Civil War long arms. Springfield produced 8,600 of these rifle muskets in 1860 and most saw heavy use during the American Civil War, making these guns fairly scarce. Condition: Good to very good. Metal with some scattered pitting and a mottled and moderately oxidized dark gray over pewter patina. Metal with some small patches of surface roughness as well. Markings remain mostly clear and legible with two good cartouche. Mechanically functional, including the tape priming mechanism. Bore poor, very dark, dirty and heavily pitted with weak rifling. Stock very good with moderate wear and numerous bumps, dings, mars, scuffs and some minor chipped loss on the obverse butt and along the rammer channel.
