Lot of 100+ items related to Elbridge Lawton (1826-1889), United States Naval Engineer. Born in Massachusetts, Elbridge Lawton was a career engineering officer who joined the navy in 1848 and had risen to Chief Engineer by 1856. During the Civil War, Lawton served aboard the steam sloop Mississippi in the West Gulf Blockading Squadron during 1861-62, and at the New York Navy Yard ca 1863-64. He was advanced to flag rank and became Fleet Engineer of the East Gulf Blockading Squadron in October 1864. Lawton remained in the navy until he retired in March 1881. He died in South Boston in July 1889. One of the highlights of the collection is Lawton's Naval sword, with a 27" etched blade featuring military motifs, etched panel at ricasso Ames Mfg Co, Chicopee Mass. Shagreen and twisted brass wire wrapped handle. Gilt brass pommel with oak leaf design. Eagle in the pommel cap. Gilt knuckle bow with branches and USN. Leather scabbard with gilt brass fittings. Ames Mfg Co. Mass marked on the brass fitting at throat. Also included are: four plastic bags of USN buttons and buckle; one engineer's book and two mechanic's pocket books; and a japanned case with dress epaulets. This fine lot is accompanied by approx. 98 letters, manuscripts, documents, and drawings concerning Elbridge Lawton's career in the United States Navy from the 1850s through the 1880s. Kennedy, Secretary of the Navy (1852-1853), 4 letters or documents signed to Lawton J.C. Dobbin, Secretary of the Navy (1853-1857), 3 letters or documents signed to Lawton Isaac Toucey, Secretary of the Navy (1857-1861), 6 letters or documents signed to Lawton Gideon Welles, Secretary of the Navy under Abraham Lincoln (1861-1869), 7 letters or documents signed to Lawton Admiral David D.
