A solid complete example of the mainstay floppy kepi made of the coarse blue wool that symbolized Billy Yank during the war. This unmarked example is nearly identical to the detailed photographs found in Howell (1975: 16) with a stiffened paste board crown measuring 5.25" in diameter, a front 4.25" tall, and rear 6" high terminating a slight "point over the nape of the neck." The telltale line of exterior stitching forming the band is 1" up from the bottom edge at back gradually becoming higher around the sides and gently sweeping to a pronounced upside down "V" in front 2" above the visor welt. The measurements are almost the same as specified in the 1865 Quartermaster Manual, ironically, the first such precise measurements for the veteran M1858 forage cap actually spelled out [Howell, 1975: 15]. Similarly, the 2" wide slightly convex black leather visor is an exact match for the 1865 specifications. The interior has a worn 1.5" wide sweatband made of thin brown leather with the crown and body lined in correct brown polished cotton. The cap is complete with two plain eagle buttons and 0.5" wide black leather chinstrap that may be a later replacement. This cap appears never to have been mounted with insignia or corps badge. Also included is a nice display box. Condition: Very good.
