From 1866 to 1869 under Johnson, then Grant, he served as Secretary of War and received the rank of full Major General. He continued to serve in the Pacific, Missouri, and in 1881 became superintendent of West Point. In 1889, Cleveland appointed him as commander of the U.S. Army, a position he occupied until his retirement in 1895, achieving the rank of Lieut. General. He retired to Florida, where he spent the last decade of his life. Provenance: Ex James E. Sanders Collection Condition: Narrow strip on top edge of verso where glued to a backing in the past.
