Born in New York, the family moved to Illinois when he was twelve. He entered the USMA in 1849, graduating in 1853 with the likes of McPherson, Sheridan, Hood, and many others who would serve both sides in the coming conflict. After a few years' service in South Carolina and Florida, Schofield returned to West Point as an instructor. He was on a leave of absence, holding a chair at Washington University in St. Louis, with war erupted. He immediately waived the remainder of his leave and became Missouri's mustering officer. Most of the first years of the war were spent in the Western Theater. Schofield commanded the Department of the Ohio in 1864, taking part in the entire Atlanta campaign. In early 1865 he was assigned to the Department of North Carolina. For Schofield, the war did not end at Appomattox, as he participated with Sherman in the final campaign against Johnston, and by the end of the war held the rank of Major General by brevet. From 1866 to 1869 under Johnson, then Grant, he served as Secretary of War and received the rank of full Major General. He continued to serve in the Pacific, Missouri, and in 1881 became superintendent of West Point. In 1889, Cleveland appointed him as commander of the U.S. Army, a position he occupied until his retirement in 1895, achieving the rank of Lieut. General.
