At the beginning of the Civil War Porter was commissioned colonel of the 15th U.S. Infantry, promoted brigadier general in 1861, lead the III Corps during the Peninsular Campaign, V Corps at the Seven Days Battle, promoted major general in 1862, was court martialed on rather trumped up charges and dismissed from the Army in 1863 and not until 1886 was he finally exonerated and placed on the Army role again.
