UNDERWOOD, Michael (1737-1820). A treatise on the diseases of children, with directions for the management of infants from the birth; especially such as are brought up by hand . London: J. Straight-grained red morocco, gilt beaded border, alternating urn and floral beaded ornaments, and a floral and leaf ornament at each corner. Smooth spine divided into six panels, lettered in one and the others tooled in gilt with alternating urn and floral devices, fore-edges and turn-ins gilt. Provenance : bound for Queen Charlotte of England (1744-1818), consort of King George III and the dedicatee (inscription on flyleaf "Bought at the sale of Queen Charlotte's books in June 1819"); Lord Naas (armorial bookplate); Lady Naas (inscription). FIRST EDITION, DEDICATION COPY. The foundation work of modern pedriatrics, going through seven editions in the author's lifetime. Underwood practised as a man-midwife, was attached to the British Lying-In Hospital, and attended the Princess of Wales, Caroline of Brunswick, at the birth of the Princess Charlotte in 1796. The work was dedicated to Queen Charlotte, the mother of fifteen children.
