Chinatown Handy Guide / San Francisco (San Francisco, 1959) Original pictorial wrappers. 5.5 x 7.5”j, 128pp. Illustrated with photographs and drawings. Issued a year after a similar Guide to Chinatown New York. • William K. Gong. Insider’s Guide to Gourmet Chinatown (San Francisco, 1970) Original wrappers. 4.5 x 8.5”, 64pp. Tipped-in carbon-copy slip states that proceeds from sale of the book would go to the emergency fund of Chinatown’s Self-Help for the Elderly. A review of 61 Chinatown restaurants. The San Francisco Chinese Hospital, which opened in 1925, serving poor immigrants and the elderly, is, to this day, the only such institution in the United States. Of special interest in the program for the Pagoda Festival fund-raiser, is an essay by T.Y.Yang, Manager of the San Francisco Chinatown Chamber of Commerce, “An Interpretation of our Chinatown’s ‘Tomorrow’”.
