As a leader of the strict Franciscan Spirituals movement, Ubertino of Casale devotes this, his principal work, to propounding the poverty of Christ, criticising those (including popes) who adapt a looser interpretation of the Rule of St. Francis. The work was highly influential; Ubertino appears in Dante’s Divine Comedy and, more recently, in Eco’s The Name of the Rose.
