Mike Monroney (1902-1980, Oklahoma); Gordon Allott (1907-1989, Colorado); Thomas Kuchel (1910-1994, California); "Lyndon Johnson, Majority Leader, US Senate," all purportedly printed in Johnson's hand (1908-1973, Texas); Estes Kefauver (1903-1963, Tennessee); and Francis B. Sayre, Jr. (1915-2008), Dean of the Washington National Cathedral. Sayre was a vocal opponent of segregation, McCarthyism, the Vietnam War and other social issues. He was President Woodrow Wilson's first grandchild and was born in the White House. Lyndon Johnson's career in Washington began in the House in 1937 with the death of his local Congressman. He was first elected to the Senate in 1948. With the support of Richard Russell, Johnson became Democratic whip in 1951, and minority leader two years later. He became majority leader in 1955 when the Democrats gained a one-vote majority. He held that post until his election as Vice President in 1961.
