Beschreibung:

.69 caliber, 42" round barrel secured by three flat barrel bands, no S/N. Bright finish, walnut stock. Standard Springfield lock markings, dated 1837 at tail, breech plug tang with matching date, standard V/P/[eagle head] inspections at breech. Altered from flint to percussion by the Belgian, or "cone in barrel" system. Sling swivels, full-length button head ramrod, brass blade front sight, lug for angular bayonet on top of barrel near muzzle. Obverse butt with applied brass plaque that reads: Found on the Battlefield of Fair Oaks/where John Wilkes Wilkerson/was killed May 31st, 1862. No supporting documentation accompanies the assertion made by the plaque, although a portrait of Wilkerson is included. A US pattern 1857 musket sling is attached to the sling swivels. Condition: Good to very good. Metal with a mottled grayish brown patina with scattered oxidation and some light pitting. Clear markings in metal, no cartouches visible on stock. Mechanically functional, good bore with scattered pitting. Stock solid with scattered bumps, dings and mars along with some added finish. Sling good, with one sliding loop replaced and the other missing.
