Topographical and Land Classification Atlas Sheets Author: Wheeler, [George M.] Place: Washington Publisher: Government Printing Office Date: 1878 Description: With 8 large folding color lithographed maps, housed inside the original folding cloth-backed printed boards covers, spine lettered in gilt. Maps numbered 1-3, 5-10 (lacks No. 4). Various sizes. "Wheeler surveyed some 361,000 square miles of the southwest between 1869 and 1979...Wheeler's primary objective was to prepare a detailed topographic map of the West" - Schwartz & Ehrenberg, pp. 304-306. Wheeler's survey was the most ambitious of the great post-Civil War surveys of the West, in the area covered and in the breadth of attention paid to the natural sciences. Comprises: Atlas Map Sheets No. 41 B: Southeast corner of Idaho and part of Northern Utah; Nos. 47 B & D (as one map or double-sheet): Parts of Eastern California and Western and Southwestern Nevada; No. 61 C: Part of Southwestern Colorado; Nos. 62 A & 62 C: Part of Central Colorado; No. 69 D: Part of Northern Central New Mexico; Nos. 77 D & 84 B: Part of Central New Mexico. Lot Amendments Condition: Foxing and toning, occasional splits and tears; else very good; maps still bright and clean. Item number: 159835
