Two microscope slide cabinets containing a collection of specimens One with maker’s label for P. K. Dutt and Company Limited, London, 20th century The first stained pine with rectangular front door enclosing thirty-nine card drawers each containing approximately twenty mid 19th century and later microscope slides mostly professionally prepared botanical and histology including examples labelled W. WATSON & SONS, 313 HIGH HOLBORN, LONDON; H. W. H. DARLASTON, BIRCHFIELD, BIRMINGHAM; FLATTERS & GARNETT L.T.D., 309 OXFORD RD., MANCHESTER; SMITH BECK & BECK, 31 Cornhill E.C.; C. BAKER, OPTICIAN, 244 HIGH HOLBORN, LONDON; G. F. KENT, PREPARER and C. COLLINS, Optician, 77 GT. TITCHFIELD ST., LONDON. W., (lacking one slide drawer), the cabinet 39cm (15.25ins) wide, the second hardwood with glazed rectangular front door enclosing twenty-eight drawers each containing on average approximately fifteen to twenty microscope slides mostly competent amateur prepared including botanical, geological, mineral and histology, the upper front rail applied with label inscribed P. K. DUTT & Co. LTD, LONDON, the cabinet 37.5cm (14.75ins) wide; with three microscope slide boxes containing assorted specimens, various preparers, late 19th century and later, containing around one hundred and seventy slides similar to those listed in the first box cabinet above, each box approximately 18cm (11 ins) wide, and a pine microscope slide box containing a prepared set of specimens, R. and J. Beck, London, late 19th century, with six drawers of six slides the Urinary Series prepared by R. & J. BECK, the inside of the box with further impressed maker’s stamp, 19.5cm (7.75ins) wide, (qty). Provenance: The Maurice Gillett collection of microscopy including inventory refs. G1013-31, G1033-44, G1075-80, G1962-4, G1973, G1975-7, G3466 and G3485. The firm of P. K. Dutt and Company Limited appear not to be recorded in the usual listings however online sources suggest that the firm was trading during the third quarter of the 20th century. The partnership between Richard and Joseph Beck is recorded in Banfield, Edwin BAROMETER MAKERS AND RETAILERS 1660-1900 as first working from 31 Cornhill 1867-80 and then 68 Cornhill from 1868. They were best known for supplying microscopes and other optical instruments which were presumably constructed in their factory at Lister Works, Kentish Town, Holloway, East London. Banfield further notes that they often signed their instruments 'R & J Beck Ltd' from 1894. Condition report disclaimer
