TWO CALENDAR MINIATURES AND INHABITED BORDERS ON THREE LEAVES FROM A BOOK OF HOURS, in Latin, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM [northern France, probably Tours, 1460s]. 145 x 102mm, comprising a leaf from the Calendar for the month of August, both sides with three-quarter border of blue and gold acanthus, naturalistic fruit and flowers incorporating a roundel showing Virgo and small miniature showing wheat threshing, a leaf from the Office of the Virgin (compline) with similar borders on both sides inhabited by two birds and a man playing bagpipes in gold, and a leaf from the litany (some fading and rubbing). The border designs of these attractive leaves show the influence of Jean Fouquet and are particularly close to the style of the Master of the Munich Boccaccio (see the Hours of Louis Malet de Graville, San Marino, Huntington Library, ms. HM 1163). Together with : two leaves from a small Book of Hours, in Latin, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM [France, 2nd half 15th century], from matins and lauds in the Office of the Virgin (some dampstaining). Card mounts. (5)
