Title: Two 1848 newspapers with news of the discovery of gold in California and the beginning of the California Gold Rush Author: Place: Various places Publisher: Date: 1848 Description: 2 volumes. Newspaper format, disbound from larger volumes. Includes: The National Intelligencer, dated Sept. 21, 1848. [4] pp. 60x47 cm (23½x18½") Washington DC: Gales and Seaton. The New York Weekly Tribune dated Dec 9, 1848. [8] pp. 52x39 cm (20½x15½") New York: Greeley & McElrath. The National Intelligencer features a prominent inside page headline: “From California” and the printing of a detailed letter signed in type by Thomas O. Larkin. Larkin gives one of the first reports to be received on the east coast of the US on the discovery of Gold in California on the American River. The NY Weekly Tribune contains a printing of the entire State of the Union Address by President James Polk. Polk gives the first “official” news of the discovery of gold in California, thus setting off the California Gold Rush. Lot Amendments Condition: A bit of light wear, a few stains in the left margin of the front page of the Tribune; very good. Item number: 282820
