The National Intelligencer features a prominent inside page headline: “From California” and the printing of a detailed letter signed in type by Thomas O. Larkin. Larkin gives one of the first reports to be received on the east coast of the US on the discovery of Gold in California on the American River. The NY Weekly Tribune contains a printing of the entire State of the Union Address by President James Polk. Polk gives the first “official” news of the discovery of gold in California, thus setting off the California Gold Rush.
