Initials, paragraph marks, and capital strokes supplied in red, the first two initials with ?later blue penwork flourishes, the first wtih gold infill. (Minor worming at beginning and end, occasional very light foxing, printer's inkstains on o2v and x2v.) 19th-century aubergine morocco over thick boards, bright purple silk liners, turn-ins gilt, top edges stained red, by A. Prévost. Provenance : Fribourg, Switzerland, Franciscans (18th-century inscription Min. Con. Monasterij S. Franciscu Friburgi Helvetiorum ) -- LF (initials written in gold on first page) -- Eric Sexton (bookplates, sale Christie's New York, 8 April 1981, lot 204). Second edition of the first work and sixth edition of the second work. This is the most substantial printed book by the second printer of Vienne, and the first of only two books signed and dated by him. A native of Basel, Frommolt appears to have taken over the press of his fellow townsman and Vienne's prototypographer Johann Schilling when the latter abandoned it in the spring of 1479. He printed 13 editions during the next four years, mostly unsigned, using a type based on Basel models, and then, following Schilling, moved to Toulouse as a bookseller. An unexplained oddity of his editions is "his evident reluctance to disclose where he was printing" (Scholderer, BMC VIII, p. lxxviii): a gap is left between the signature and the date in the colophon of the Turrecremata, and a similar clearly deliberate omission is made in the colophon of his other signed edition (Oldradus de Ponte de Laude, Goff L-81). This edition appears to be based on Michel Greyff's Reutlingen edition of 1480 (Goff T-550).
