A rare belt with red needlepoint background accented with green foliage motif. Both yarn and beads used. Beads in colors of white, gray, crystal, and black. With Turner slogan Gut Heil (Good Health) at center of belt. Entire belt backed with green leather, 37 in. ln. x 3 in. width. The belt fastens at the rear with two straps and two buckles. The Turners, or Turnverein were a paramilitary German-American athletic society, founded in 1848 in Cincinnati. They had large and active societies, most with their own halls. The Turners were especially active in Cincinnati, Louisville, Chicago, St. Louis, and Milwaukee. Beaded belts are depicted in the four extant lithographs of groups of Turners. Some are stitched with yarn only, while others are comprised of yarn and glass beads. Condition: Very fine condition.
