TRUMBULL, JONATHAN (the elder), Governor of Connecticut. . Autograph letter signed ("Jonth. Trumbull" with paraph) to the Committee of Pay, Lebanon [Pennsylvania?], 5 August 1776. One page, 4to, recipient's endorsements on verso, neatly inlaid at edges. SUPPLIES FOR THE CONTINENTAL ARMY, 1776 "Please to draw on the Treasurer for the Sum of One thousand pounds in favour of Mr. Chauncey Whittlesey, to enable him to go on purchasing Tents and Clothing for the Continental Army; to be paid out of the Money lodged in the Treasury by Mr. [Roger] Sherman if sent for that purpose. Otherwise, out of the proper Treasury of this State. Said Whittlesey to render this Amount Accordingly...." Trumbull (1710-1785), Governor of Connecticut from 1769-84, was the only colonial governor to support the cause of independence and played a very important role in organizing the supply of food, clothing and munitions for the Continental Army, as documented in the present letter, written a month and a day after the Declaration of Independence.
