Fine condition. TRUMAN AND THE BILL OF RIGHTS: "THE LIBERTY OF THE INDIVIDUAL IS THE KEYSTONE OF OUR FORM OF GOVERNMENT" A very provocative letter in which Truman affirms the importance of individual freedoms and the Bill of Rights which protects them; written at the very threshold of the Macarthy era in which that protection and those liberties were under attack. "I am pleased to know that you have taken especial note of my recent speech at the dedication of the American Legion Building in Washington [on ]. Needless to say, the liberty of the individual is the keystone of our form of government and, while, we must fight communism with every resource at our command both at home and abroad, we must be careful not to encroach upon the Bill of rights."
