Travels - Turkey] - [ Voyage pittoresque de Constantinople et des rives du Bosphore ]. Brussels, Goubaud, 1822-1828, folio, 47,5 x 33 cm, quarter buckram (sl. rubbed, scratch on lower cover, corners sl. bumped), flat gilt spine (lower part neatly repaired), 49 plates on vellum paper (foxing esp. in margins but also touching some plates).
Atlas only. Fine collection of 49 lithographs after the copper engravings of Melling (Paris, 1809-1819), made for his "Voyage pittoresque de Constantinople et des rives du Bosphore". The lithographs, printed in Brussels by the "Calcographie Royale of Innocent-Louis Goubaud", from 1822 on, formed a 1st series of separate deliveries together with the plates made for the "Voyage pittoresque de la Grèce", which was printed simultaneaously. The plates were drawn by the first generation of Belgian lithographers i.a. Paul Lauters, Antoine Lemonnier, F. Plou, M. Peetermans ... Most of them however are the work of Lauters. It is most certainly the marvelous work of the youthful Lauters that elevates this atlas to its remarkable quality. Some titles of the plates: Vue des îles des Princes, Vue de la première (- seconde) cour du Sérail, Marche solemnelle du Grand-Seigneur le jour du Baïram, Cérémonie d'une noce turque, Intérieur d'un café public, Vue du champ des morts, Aqueduc de l'Empereur Justinien, etc. Ref. Van der Marck, pp. 76.
