Place: New York Publisher: Greeley & McElrath Date: 1843 Description: 112 pp. 23.8x15.5 cm. (9¼x6"), original printed wrappers, re-backed with cloth tape. Second (or Third) Edition. "Farnham was the leader of a group of Oregon-bound settlers, known as the 'Peoria Party.' Leaving Independence on May 20, 1839, the party followed the Santa Fe Trail to Bent's Fort on the Arkansas River, where they divided. Farnham...traveled up to Arkansas, over the divide to the North Platte River, and on to Brown's Hole on the Green River...on to Oregon, arriving at Marcus Whitman's mission on September 23...." - (Wagner-Camp). First published in 1841, there were three separate editions in 1843. The present edition was issued as an "Extra" of the New York Tribune. Field 525; Howes F50; Sabin 23872; Smith 3001; Tweney 20; Wagner-Camp 85:3. Lot Amendments Condition: Lacks original wrappers spine, chipped heavily at front wrapper, dampstaining at top edge of rear wrapper, tiny soiling scattered about; chipped at top corner of first 50 pp.; browned, foxed or dampstained at page edges; good.
