Travel album of Thailand, China, Japan etc. 1890s - 1900. Circa 150 photographs in various processes: collodion paper prints, some hand-colored albumen prints, gelatin silver prints, cyanotypes and 58 postcards. Various sizes between 26 x 38 cm (1), 21 x 28 cm (ca 20) and 11 x 15,5 cm. Some mounted in album page slits, some mounted to album pages (time-stained), bound in contemporary half leather album (rubbed/scuff marks). Unusually extensive travel album of a voyage to Asia, most probably compiled by a German engineer working and travelling in several countries. The album documents a typical journey to the Far East beginning with Suez, Aden, Thailand/Cambodia (69), Ceylon, China (66), Japan (10) and South America. The majority of photographs are by professional photographers, a small group are private. The scenes range from various industrial projects such as bridges, mining, field irrigation, wood exploitation, natives in their villages, work scenes with elephants, ceremonial images, Japanese portraits and temples, daily and street life as well as a sequence of a public beheading. Chinese photos with circular photographer's stamp (W. Tai Fong) on the verso. – Some prints faded (especially Japan views), some surface scratches/scuff marks, most in good to very good condition.
