A sample book containing 67 examples of leather-work, probably for bookbinding].
N.p. but (?)Eastern Europe: n.d. but circa 1900]. Oblong folio (12 1/4 x 8 1/2 inches; 313 x 215mm). 22 brown card leaves on silk guards, with 67 mounted samples (6 parchment, 61 leather) variously stained, tooled, stamped and ruled in gilt, blind and paint, each sample with either manuscript or typed stock or code numbers beside them on the mount, sample number "074" removed. Contemporary brown calf elaborately blocked in blind, brown moiré silk pastedowns. Condition : light spotting, some leaves slightly cockled. an extraordinary album offering a visual survey of leather tooling at the turn of the 20th century: apparently a sample book featuring a wide selection of the work of an unidentified eastern-european leather worker or book-binder of the highest quality. The style of the tooling suggests a date and area of origin but unfortunately it has not been possible to identify the individual firm or artists responsible. The rectangular swatches which range in size from 3 1/4 x 3 inches to 9 3/4 x 6 1/4 inches include six examples on heavy parchment, the remainder being made up from several different sorts of calf and morocco. A few examples include pictorial reliefs, but most are decorated with arabesques, mosaics and floral designs. What is parchment: paper or vellum? Check binding description
