(5 3/8 x 3 7/16 in.), verso unused, one corner slightly creased, but otherwise in very good condition. An intense half-length pose, showing the author of War and Peace with a white beard, wearing what appears to be a peasant shirt of coarse cloth. In his last years Tolstoy embraced Christian anarchism and non-violence, liberated the serfs on his estate and altered his lifestyle and dress to express his spiritual identification with the peasants, as this photograph shows. These radical actions led to troubles within his family. Unable to cope with their quarrels, Tolstoy secretly left his home on 28 October 1910; he died eleven days later. Boldly signed against white background at lower portion.
