Title: To the Committee and Members of the British Association for Discovering the Interior Parts of Africa, this Map is with their Permission Most Respectfully Inscribed... Author: Arrowsmith, Aaron Place: London Publisher: Date: 1802-1811 Description: Copper-engraved map, hand-colored in outline. On four sheets joined into two, overall approx. 125x144 cm. (49x56½"). Immense map of Africa as known, with detailed delineation of southernmost Africa, the Congo region, along the Senegal River, Ethiopia as explored by James Bruce etc., but much of the interior blank. The Niger River and the Nile are thought to be the same, the outlet of the Niger in the Gulf of Guinea not yet having been discovered. This is the 1811 revision of the 1802 map, produced as the great explorations in the interior of Africa by Park, Clapperton, Livingstone, Stanley, Burton, Speke and others were yet to take place. Lot Amendments Condition: Minor discoloration and offset, a few edge tears the longest being about 3", else very good or better, quite scarce. Item number: 183902
