Title: The Spectator Author: [Addison, Joseph & Richard Steele] Place: Glasgow Publisher: Printed by David Niven for W. Creech, et al Date: 1791 Description: 8 volumes. Engraved frontispiece in each volume. (12mo) 17.5x10.5 cm (7x4¼") period full calf, red and green labels. “After the closure of The Tatler, a yawning gap in the market must have been as obvious to Addison and Steele as it was to the reading public at large. They responded by initiating The Spectator on 1 March 1711, thus embarking on one of the most triumphant literary projects of the age. Before the paper closed on 6 December 1712, it had gone through 555 issues, had regularly sold up to 4000 copies (indeed even larger figures for a few numbers), and had transformed periodical writing in English. The Spectator came out six days a week, Monday to Saturday.” (DNB) Lot Amendments Condition: A few small nicks and bumps to leather; very good. Item number: 245685
